Arlen Specter, 1930 - 2012

By Tony AuthOver the years I've drawn Arlen Specter more than a few times. Political cartooning is a critical medium, so most of the drawings were not very flattering.
One time, at a fund-raising event for the Reading Terminal Market, Specter came up and began berating me for a recent drawing I had done, in front of my wife, children and extended family. I defended myself and Arlen went on his way. My family couldn't believe it, but I assured them that all was well. Arlen was just being Arlen, and in any event, freedom of speech is a two-way street. Over the years, my respect for Specter grew, as my appreciation of his independence and serious hell-raising increased. He will be missed.
