Tony Auth is digital artist-in-residence for NewsWorks' "Behind the Lines" blog.
Tony was the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for The Philadelphia Inquirer for 41 years, where his cartoons, seemingly simple and always direct, influenced public opinion and politicians in the city, state and country. At WHYY, working on both cultural and political subjects, he has pioneered a new form of online cartooning, while continuing to produce a steady stream of award-winning cartoons that appear first on NewsWorks before syndication across the country.
When this cartoon was published in 2010, I received many emails questioning my sanity. How could I possibly not see how fabulous the Tea Party movement was, and what a boon to the Republican party?
A common thread was that my liberal bias had blinded me to all the positive things this infusion of grass roots enthusiasm would do for the Republican party as well as the country. All that, and a lot of name calling too.
