West Philly photographer finds grace within prison walls
October 21, 2011
By Peter CrimminsThe largest maximum-security prison in the United States is the Louisiana State Penitentiary, more commonly known as Angola Prison. Most of its 5,000 inmates are serving life sentences. It's a place where men grow old and die.
In the 1990s, the prison launched a hospice program wherein inmates are allowed to assist their fellow prisoners who are dying.
Photographer Lori Waselchuk spent nearly three year photographing Angola Prison's end-of-life care. She assembled her photos into a book, "Grace Before Dying."
WHYY's Arts and Culture reporter, Peter Crimmins, met Waselchuk in her West Philadelphia home.
