Keeping their school's winning streak intact, the Imhotep Institute Charter High School varsity cheerleading squad took top honors in the first PIAA city championships on Jan. 26.

In doing so, they joined the football and basketball teams in winning PIAA competitions.

"Our team is making history," said Nadirah Bennett, head coach of a varsity squad that will compete in this weekend's inaugural PIAA Competitive Spirit Championships.

On Friday morning, the team took one last practice run during a pep rally of sorts, their mission summed up in shirts that read, "You have all season to prove yourself. We have two and a half minutes!"

After a short but energetic performance, the team caught its collective breath in a hallway outside the gym. There, team captains and seniors Imani Glenn and Dralynn Coleman said this weekend's performance includes stunts, flips, gymnastics and dance.

Assistant coach Dianna Handy said she expects the 24-girl squad to battle for top-tier results at Hershey Park Arena.
