It was sometime around midnight on Tuesday that a former police officer with ties to the area struck and killed a two-year-old boy in Key Largo, Florida.
According to the story reported by KeysNet.com, an area news website, a 2013 Hyundai Sonata being driven by Edward Krajewski, a Former Lower Southampton Police officer, struck and killed two-year-old Austen Mark Alward on Route 1 in Florida, near mile marker 99.
A deputy stopped Krajewski's vehicle about an hour after the child's body had been found because of the front-end damage to his car.
According to officials, Krajewski said he knew he hit something but didn't realize it was a person.
The child's parents believed the boy was asleep in bed but he had managed to make it out the door and through a gate, about 50-yards away from his house onto Route 1.
Krajewski, a 17-year veteran of the force, was convicted of conspiracy in 1996 for a plot to rob a Philadelphia drug dealer. The scheme was thwarted when police got wind of the plan, which included the son of a then-Bensalem, Pa. mayor. Krajewski was sentenced to 5- to 10-years in prison and was paroled in 2002.
According to report filed earlier in the day by the same publication, Krajewski was not in custody but investigators were discussing possible charges.
