Blumenfeld: Go ahead and restore the Divine Lorraine, and put a Jose Garces restaurant in the Metropolitan Opera House for that matter. We'll love you for it. But do you honestly believe that consolidating Masterman, Ben Franklin High School, Franklin Learning Center, and Parkway High School could be anything short of a disaster? Or do you not care? This is the most ludicrous educational fiasco-in-the-making I have heard of in years. Everyone knows you're salivating over the real estate where each of these schools now stands. But driving children out of schools in good neighborhoods and corralling them into a North Philly wasteland with high crime stats is NOT innovative. It's just greedy. You're a developer. Stick to developing and keep the city's children out of the equation.

grandiose and overreaching plan. Perhaps that's the strategy to ask for more than one expects to receive from the government. Why more public money for what is a private enterprise? Go ahead and rehab the Lorraine but relocate schools and disrupt the neighborhood, what happens to those vacant school buildings and what about integrated slow growth (that's happened and continues)that keeps pace with our slowed economy. Be real. And yes, there will be a fight to keep one person's vision from turning an entire section of the city into a Disney dream.

I fully realize there's no way for me not to sound all NIMBY here, but Mr. Blumenfeld has made these grand, grand plans for what is quite literally My Back Yard. And my garden. And my kitchen. And my bedroom. The sketches I saw yesterday call for my home -- a late 1800s structure that was, by turns, a cable-car repair barn, a firehouse, an bodyshop, a squatters' haven, and now two loft residences -- to be demolished to make way for the courtyard of the campus's visual-arts complex. It would have been nice if, before he kicked off his campaign to seduce Philadelphia's political and financial leaders, he'd at least talked with those of us who have already made a significant commitment to -- and investment in -- our neighborhood. I have yet to hear from him or from anyone else in City leadership about what's happening -- or whether and when those of us most affected by the proposals will have a chance to weigh in. We're waiting . . .

I think it is great that someone wants to renovate the Lorraine. And hopefully it will spur more development. But I saw his plans for redevelopment, and they include wiping out a bunch of new market-rate condos, and a historic firehouse that was painstakingly renovated into lofts. Eminent domain can be a necessary evil, but only when the replacement is necessary. Cooking schools and NBA facilities should not replace the work that was done by individuals to make it a neighborhood that made it an attractive investment opportunity. He'll see a fight.

This is the same guy who when he sold the Divine Lorraie the last time he stripped it and sold off its original detailing! Blumenfeld is always trying to scam tax payer money, Farnese's office is out of their minds if they think the public will support funding a private project with public money only to have the money grubbing developer (Blumenfeld!) get rich! Not one public dollar!

We're trying to kind of figure out the original DNA of this building and what we've uncovered is that, originally when it was built in 1892, there was a speakeasy below here," he says I was under the impression that Prohibition did not start until 1920. Yet this guy claims in 1892 there was a "need" for a speakeasy.

I'm very excited to see that something to be done to restore this building. Ever since I first discovered the building when I was around in the area, I've been dreaming that this gorgeous building could be restored. However, I definitely do not support public dollars being used to restore it. It won't be a public space, so why should the public pay for it unless the money would go towards improving the area's streetscape? It actually would be nice if one level was dedicated to being a sort of museum, talking about the history of Divine Lorraine and that area of Broad Street.

I'm so happy that Blumenfeld is doing this. The Divine Lorraine is a beautiful and historic building that has gone to crap but that has so much potential. I think by putting money into this, Philadelphia would get a lot out of it.
