The only thing I feel bad for is the poor macaw. No responsible bird owner would ever leave one of thier "feathered kids" unattended outside! Shame on you if that's how you show love to an animal that has the intelligence of a 5 year old child! If it wasn't stolen, it was probably eaten by another predator. Have you ever heard of a hawk? I've seen them eat animals as large as ducks in my neighborhood! And with feathers that bright all she is is a target! I hope she is with a GOOD RESPONSIBLE home if she's not freezing outside in the cold somewhere!

I also owned an Amazon Parrot in Detroit and when that bird died a piece of me died also. Everything that occcurs is the will of God and acceptance is necessary to heal the pain of that loss. May Allah bless the family in their loss and let this be a lesson for them & THE REST OF US in pet care. We shoiuld not be harsh or insensitive to the owners at this time. They are grieving a loss.

not sure if you were addressing me or the above posters (tldr), but seeing the bird was one of the most beautiful and surreal experiences ive had in this city. it's a shame that it was nabbed; i only hope it is being taken care of as a pet and wasn't tortured and killed. Maybe a kitty kat kilt it though? i dunno. Any way, you could say this Toucan Sam is Toucan Sad ~.~

Ppl these days are inconsiderate and mean. My kids enjoyed talking to this bird and learning about it to bad your to ignorant to see that part!

I am her sister and I am heart broken. Your insensitivity and lack of consideration with your response is proof of how ignorant people CAN be. Maybe your just ill hearted. If you would take the time to show a little concern maybe you would ask these questions before flashing your invisible PhD! She is my Macaw and they were watching her while I worked this summer and you and the theif (if it's not you)obviously would not understand how horrible My sister and especially her husband must feel for making such a careless mistake. Josie does have a muscular disorder that not only prevents her from flying but she cannot spread her wings at all. Oh yeah, her VET discovered this rare disorder 26 years ago when she was born and she was cared for anyway, instead of taking the replacement macaw. I have the record right here in front of me from 1986! Josie is worth way more then you could imagine because she has performed shows educating the youth of the Philadelphia on animal cruelty for the past 6 years including the less fortunate children of the salvation army, mom and child homeless shelters in the area and numerous Christmas toy giveaways for the Temple Police Department, Walmart and Target just to name a few. So see Ms. BYRDGRL, because u assumed you knew the story you reacted the way you did. Don't worry I don't fully blame you it could have your upbringing, Who knows? But if you're not going to help the cause please keep your negativity within your circle, don't feed it to the readers. Most importantly PLEASE DON'T ASSUME YOU KNOW THE FACTS, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW WHAT ASSuming does! Anyway this article is for a lost parrot instead we found the donkey!

A friend and I walked by this parrot chillin unsupervised on a porch in Nicetown several months ago. No one was around, there was no parrot bird paraphernalia in sight and it looked as if it had a touch of mange. quite a Herzogian flourish to our day if i may say so. Hope the parrot is doing fine and eatin well!

Shame on the owners for the care of this bird in the first place! I have to agree- the bird should not ever go back to that family. Why would they leave it on a railing for several hours, disabled or not, in that kind of neighborhood? And why, in the photo, is it shown with a dog crate? I hope that isn't the bird's cage. Who ever stole the bird probably did it for the birds well-being. And the nonsense about the bird's diet is ridiculous- it probably contributed to the bird's medical problems. Prayers that the bird is in a safe place with people who know how to care for it.

That bird, if still still alive, never needs to go back in that home. First of all, why would ANY responsible owner leave a bird sitting outside on a railing while they went shopping and especially a handicapped bird? It might not have been a theft at all but a dog or cat or hawk that got this defenseless bird. And you leave what you are calling a $2500 bird outside y itself when there are "There are a million people outside, especially on a Friday."????? I guess she thought none of those "million" people would need to make a quick few dollars to support a drug or alcohol habit? If that is the case than I want to move there because it's the only totally crime free area I have ever heard of. And does she really think a bird with a "degenerative muscle disorder" is worth $2500? "Josie had a degenerative muscle disorder that prevented the blue and gold macaw from flying." Really? Did she ever take the bird to a vet to confirm that or did she and her sister come up with that diagnosis themselves. From what was said about the bird's diet it is highly likely that this bird was suffering from malnutrition that caused the problem. I hope this bird is alive and well and has somehow ended up in the hands of someone who knows how to properly care for it because from everything I have read this woman should never have had and never should have a bird. Maybe she didn't know some of the proper ways to take care of her bird but even without that knowledge, common sense should have applied.
