It's just that the Republicans don't take their oath of office seriously. When each of those Republicans took the oath of office they swore to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States. What they are supposed to be doing is what's best for the country not what's best for the party. Until people wake up and call these clowns on their hypocrisy, the R's will continue to represent their real constituency, Wall Street and the 1%

Scott, if you are going to dream, try to dream more effectively. Let's not meddle half-way with tax rates, or limit the deductions to a dollar amount that will drift, like the AMT. If we are going to re-do things let's go whole hog: lower the tax rates to start at 1% at the poverty line, and go up to about 10 or 15 % for the top end. But there are NO deductions or distinctions. If you can spend it, it's income, and taxable. No mortgage deduction; capital gains are income; no medical deduction; dividends are income. You get the idea. Everybody is giving up a little of their precious special treatment, and everybody is paying a little bit to the common budget. Then we have to look sensibly at the spending, but that's another comment.

These vast sums of money are essentially unimaginable to me. And it's impossible to raise taxes 2% on the last million dollars earned in a year? OK. My proposed compromise: Raise tax rates half way between today's rates and the Clinton era rates on everyone, remove deductions above $100k, and increase capital gains taxes for all gains above $50k in a year to match income taxes with a waiver for any family owned, private business changing hands due to the passing of the owner. At the same time, let all of the spending cuts that would be automatic with the fiscal cliff take effect, making that the status quo budget, yoib which Congress can then start building up unfunded programs again. By the way, has everyone forgotten that the entire Iraq war was never actually part of the official budget during the Bush years?

Wise Choices..Bad Choices

Suppose one has an extra $1 million that the government wants to take as a new tax.. just because you have it and gov. wants your money. What would you choose? Allowing the one who made that $1 million to spend it on donations to cultural institutions, to schools, to hire workers on their property, to buy things from stores, to go to restaurants, etc., using their own money directly into the economy with zero loss factor for the efficient use of that money. Choice number two: Allow the government to take it all in taxes. The government wastes a large part of all of our money with about a 50% inefficiency factor just to get that money back out into the economy because of all the people they have to hire to administer, regulate and monitor how taxes are spent. So $1 million has become half of that immediately. 50% is lost immediately! What does the gov spend money on? Some good and necessary stuff and a lot of not so good and really wasteful stuff, Solyndra anyone? That was half a billion. Considering that the very wealthy are already paying more then half of all of our taxes right now, (with the same 50% gov. loss factor,) why would anyone be demanding more from them? Why not demand that gov. reduce its 50% loss factor, instead?
