Why is it that Microsoft is willing to bribe the U.S. Government with a "donation" for each stem worker, yet they are unwilling to accept the duel that Keep America At Work has slapped them in the face with in a effort to see Americans hired in America?

Won't pass Senate

If Senate passes this, I will immediately buy two houses here in the US. I have been in US since a long time in high tech industry and have been working since 2005. Due to paucity of visas, the employers are in a position to make us work at lower wages than they give to American citizens. I cannot buy a house if no residency is offered even at these low interest rates. I can afford two houses and will definitely buy two houses if I receive the permanent residence quicker. The wait for GC is endless.

BPM, that is precisely the problem. STEM education is hard! When you take the easy way out though, you can't really expect these great jobs and complain that no one will hire you to do them! Work hard, get good grades in school, get a loan for a science/engg degree, go to grad school (which is usually funded, but with only enough for subsistence), live like that for a few years, get your advanced degree. It's not easy, but it's all about delayed gratification.

Refuse to hire US citizens? Nobody does that, this is a problem that has arisen because there aren't enough citizens to fill these positions! Also, 'third world' labor? You're just a whiny little racist, aren't you? These positions are pretty well paid, do you all even have a clue? I'm a 'third world' PhD who is starting out on six figures. Qualified citizens always get the jobs, in fact, they get the pick of government scientific jobs that I can't get, as a non citizen. Fair enough. We get educated at your universities, gain cutting edge reseaerch knowledge that if we took back home, would allow our countries to compete with you very effectively. Yet, the ones that stay actually want to contribute to THIS country. You may not like the color of our skin, but is it smart for you to have us leave?

STEM education is hard, and all education is expensive. Why go through all that with this kind of thing taking all the certainty out of your future ability to get hired?

If these positions are unable to be filled domestically now, then the salaries should rise to attract candidates. This is how we get good paying jobs. When that happens people will get the education to fill those jobs, and Universities will ramp up their ability to provide it. The whole point of this is to fill those as cheaply as possible. Perhaps employers should pay a visa tax to make these immigrant employees less attractive and encourage domestic hiring. If that happened it would be a level playing field and they could import an many as they liked. I'm not against immigration, just against companies using it to deflate another domestic job sector.

"Obama and Democrats should support Republican STEM Jobs Act immigration reform bill" No, they shouldn't. What they SHOULD do is stop all legal immigration until unemployment of US citizens falls below 4%, and stop all STEM visas until STEM education in the US is adequate to supply at least 90% of the demand for STEM employees. That's what the REPUBLICANS should be pushing for to support the American people, instead of just allowing business to refuse to hire US citizens and instead import 3rd-world labor.
