Don I appreciate your comment. The guy that gives me hope, though, is Donnie Andrews. I saw him standing quietly with his sign while a number of city leaders were at a groundbreaking in Germantown. I walked up to him and told him I wanted to talk to him about it. I met him a day or so later and he told me a story that still gives me chills. This is a guy who's doing something beyond holding a sign. He's mentoring kids and trying to point them in a different direction. I admire him a lot. Check out his video here: http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local/the-philadelphia-experiment/44779-donnie-andrews-logans-last-gunfighter

I'm not going to pretend that I understand what it’s like to live in the neighborhoods you describe. I’m also in no position to understand the complexity of the strategic challenges faced by law enforcement and city government. And despite the increase in violent crime, I have a hard time assessing their efforts as ineffective – after all, things could be a lot worse. But it’s clear something more or different has to be done. I highly recommend listening to Dave Davies’ Fresh Air interview with David Kennedy, author of the book, “Don’t Shoot: One Man, A Street Fellowship and the End of Violence in Inner-City America”. If you’re correct in your assertion that these embattled communities have guys like Donnie Andrews just waiting for the right kind of help, then it would seem that Kennedy’s book would be required reading for everyone in Philadelphia City government and in law enforcement faced with getting a handle on this problem. The aftermath of some of Kennedy’s most successful programs bear out, however, that to positively impact these neighborhoods requires the allocation of significant resources on many levels, combined with a genuine commitment from the citizenry at large, and that the problem is much deeper and broader than a handful of kids shooting each other up over a little bit of money and the color of their cap. As a father who would be devastated at the loss of one of my children, anything we can do to save one life is worth doing. You can check out Davies’ conversation with Kennedy here: http://www.npr.org/2012/11/09/164732917/interrupting-violence-with-the-message-dont-shoot

Ms. Tart, thanks so much for the impassioned response. I share your concern about the "studies," the drugs given to children, and the violence that pervades our entertainment, but I honestly don't believe it's solely up to the president or the mayor to fix the violence in our community. Amongst all the questions we ask about what other people are doing to fix our problems, the one question that's often missing is this: What am I doing to fix my own problems? Don’t misunderstand me. There are many things politicians can do. They can lead by example, fund traditional crime fighting apparatus, bring opposing parties to the table, and devote resources to empowering neighbors. But they can't do it alone. To quote Margaret Meade, "Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." In other words, we have to hold others accountable, but we also have to change our communities ourselves. No one has a greater stake in it than us. That might sound like I'm being "cute," but just because it's cute doesn't make it any less true. Again, thanks for your response (I love that you included references to classic black books, TV shows and movies). I hope you have a happy day, too.

Okay, I'm going to play devil's advocate. The article is cute but it's the same thing I've read, heard and seen for over 40 years. I can watch blaxploitation movies from the 60s and 70s and get the same feel I get from this article...numbness. Yet,like with the movies and this article, solutions are elementary to say the least (no disrespect): Where are the politicians and vote mentioned? What about the the colleges, universities and medical centers receiving billions of dollars to study gun and other violence? What solutions have they created to decrease the violence? What about all the non-profits receiving funds? How are they held accountable and forced to prove that the funds aren't being squandered and misused? Furthermore, when the President of the United States of America and the Mayor of the birthplace of the United States of America both state 'The Wire' is one of their favorite shows (with the Mayor hosting a viewing in City Hall) then I expected chaos. But it's so sad that the cities President Obama and Mayor Nutter call home have murder rates off the chart. What's going...tell me what's going on? To end my reply I want ask this question: Since many of the victims and perpetrators are mostly black males under 30 years old, that means many were probably diagnosed with ADD/ADHD/other "behavioral" problems in elementary school. How have their brains been altered once off the drugs to deal with anger, frustration and conflict resolution? Therefore, until the powers-that-be decide enough is enough, Claudine's Native Sons and Young Bloods will continue to run through the Halls of Anger in Cooley High all the while knowing that A Hero Ain't Nothing But A Sandwich because many of the adults continue dancing the Monkey Hustle! Mr. Jones, thanks for the article and have a HAPPY DAY!
