Funny, Biden and Hillary were two of the biggest chickenhawks of the Iraq War years. They even attacked other Democrats who spoke out against the war. I think the Bush-era neocons were clowns, but let's not forget that most congressional Democrats signed off on the invasion.

Talebanned likes Bermuda. Personally I think the Azores may be lesser known than Bermuda, but might be a better target for that very reason. Plus, Portugal has been conspicuously peaceful for far too long. If we can float the idea to John McCain, this thing might get some legs.

yes, they can plan ahead. But when you can't borrow, you must pay as you go. There's a reason why most businesses have a line of credit, at least for payroll, even when they are very profitable. Cash flow is just that - cash flow. It's not constant, but bills must be paid. I acknowledge that they can stockpile some cash on "good" days. They can also choose not to pay some bills on time, or not at all. Unfortunately, ANY of those would lower our credit rating and devastate the markets and the economy. The only reason things are OK now is that our debt is so highly valued by the markets - we pay a pittance of interest on it. I agree we need to get spending under control, and understand, to some extent, using the debt ceiling as the "big stick". Where I get nervous is that many Democrats won't acknowledge that spending is a problem and entitlements MUST be reformed. But there are also many Republicans that don't seem to realize how devastating this will be after a few months. And it will have repercussions for many years to come. If you're curious, here's an updated version of the study the article you linked to is based upon. It's actually in a very easy to read power point format. http://bipartisanpolicy.org/library/staff-paper/debt-limit

Scooter - this whole coin nonsense is just that, nonsense. There is a better way to handle the whole debt ceiling and it's been mentioned by Robert Reich and Matt Miller both former Clinton appointees and that is for the President to ignore the debt ceiling and use the 14th Amendment as justification. The Republicans will take it to the Supreme Court and then we can as a country stop all the grandstanding. Congress enacts spending legislation and then is shocked when we come up against the debt limit? Puhleeze.

I think that is a great idea, TAL*E! Everyone but right-wing Repubicans knows that what we need to do to get the econonmy growing strongly again and creating jobs is for the government to pass stimulous legislation. Then when the economy is humming again, people are working (infrastructure , green energy) tax revenues will increase with a growing economy, and we'll start cutting into the deficit. Everyone wins! Except those who hate Obama more than they wish the country would do well. I like your thinking!

I was wonder how long it would take you to bring up the stupid idea of the trillion dollar coin. You and Krugman never disappoint me. How about we just make a hundred $1 trillion coins and we would not have any debt. That way we could raise spending by a couple trillion a year.

"But there is a loophole: The Treasury has the ability to mint a coin in any denomination, deposit it into its Federal Reserve account and use it to pay off its debts -- essentially getting rid of the debt ceiling threat for now." The Magic Coin! It has a Mormonest feel to it. BTW: As a BIG/Ohio State guy, I love watching ND get its butt kicked. I'm not so much down on the SEC, as I see Urban building a team to knock them off. Go, Bucks!
