I was walking to my car Tuesday night, and as I crossed the street (I had the green) a man hit me with his car...I ended up on the ground trying to figure out what the heck just happened when he ran over my foot, and, incrediby kept going...I had six wonderful guys get out of their cars to help me up and stop traffic coming the other way from hitting me again...I am forever grateful to them. I am very, very, very, lucky, however, as I sat in the street looking at the man's car driving away, I kept thinking, ok, when is he going to stop? He never did. Witnesses said he was around 77, 78 years old, one man saw his face and thought he definitely saw me....I don't know how we can change this, but thanks for trying. Carol S.

It seems from your comments that either you endorse leaving the scene, or just don't think people should be obligated to help someone hurt or dying in the street. That's fine. It won't prevent me from hoping someone would have the basic decency to help you if you were ever in that situation.

"If they stayed at the scene, they could have called 911 themselves, possibly perform first aid. They could save lives." Yes but under the law the driver could watch the person die never calling for help and they would have no criminal culpability because they stayed at the scene

I cannot believe what you wrote. You are literally an idiot. Hit a runs are not always by wreckless drivers. It could be an innocent accident like a simple loss of control. The person sticking around for emergency response. Also, in the case of a wreckless driver, if they flee, doesn't mean they will turn themselves in afterwards, therefore a wreckless driver is out there and the next one could be one of your children crossing the street. Either you're a hypocrite or you have a hit and run your would rather not talk about. If you shoot a person...you should be shot too, by a cop preferably. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

This is a good samiritan rule. If you have hit someone with a couple tons of steel, it is gonna do serious damage. Fleeing means that you are leaving that person to die by not assisting in getting them medical attention. There is also the fact that if you leave the scene there is no way that later on you can prove that the pedestrain was wrong! Remember, if someone shoots another person, and flees the scene they are liable for the bodily harm applied-same here!

If they stayed at the scene, they could have called 911 themselves, possibly perform first aid. They could save lives. If they flee the scene, it is quite possible that the person could lie there for hours before their corpse is found by some passing motorist.

While I appreciate the passion, hsru, I'd stop short of capital punishment in these cases. But, at a minimum, I'd like to see laws fashioned where it doesn't benefit a driver (often intoxicated or distracted) to take off and leave victims for dead in the streets.

Anticipations of failure are difficult for dolts. Anticipating consequences are even harder. Leaving the scene of an accident causes a DELAY in medical attention. If your injuries are serious enough a delay will result in DEATH instead of full recovery. IMHO Leaving the scene should cause a presumption of intoxication and INTENT. Automatic DWI conviction and first degree murder sentence if your victim dies after you leave the scene. The world already has enough people. Lethally injecting the assault drivers is a good place to start saving the planet.
