I'm glad you bring this up, I couldn't agree more. Like car owners, gun owners should be required to go through a skills test, register and insure each gun on an annual basis (and again if they move to another state), and have annual safety inspections. Further, the right to own a gun should be taken away based on background checks. Let's start today.

The Gun Question...

There may be many reasons for having a gun and some make sense to me, but the one that drives me up a wall are those people who think that ownership of guns is somehow a defense against government tyranny. Conservative commentator David Frum was able to crystalize my thoughts/feelings about this quite succintly after the Newtown shooting when he tweeted: "For citizens of a constitutional republic to say they want guns to maintain the option to wage war against their government is not distrust of authority. It is insurrectionism . It is lawlessness. It is anti-constitutional in the profoundest sense. And the acutal precedent for when large numbers of Americans last talked this way is 1860-61." I don't want to take anyone's guns away but I do want background checks on those who are purchasing them regardless of whether it's at a gun show or a storefront dealer or a private sale. I don't think a restriction on gun ownership for someone who has undergone mental illness treatment in no way impugns or restricts anyone who is mentally stable from acquiring a gun. I think it is amazing that the very same people who reject a slippery slope argument when it comes to abortion and women's rights use the same argument when it comes to guns.

Lisa the proliferation of guns is the issue, not just that they are in the wrong hands. I have worked with difficult kids my whole life and feel I am a person who is in good emotional control, but am glad I wasn't packin, many times! Human beings are far more complex than "good" or "bad". Auth once again is on the money!

No, cars have a purpose other than killing. I don't use a gun to take my daughter to school. I don't load my gun up with groceries to feed my family. Guns don't allow people to commute to work. In any case, very few people are advocating a complete ban on guns. In most instances it is the most dangerous weapons (the ones used in tragic mass shootings) that are up for discussion. What worries me the most are the groups and individuals who say they need weapons because of some expected future apocalypse or other type of mass chaos in the future. They try couch it in language that makes them sound like patriots and potential saviors of American values. I'm sure if a nation-wide Mad Max level societal change were to actually happen those guys would not suddenly become altruistic protectors of the rights and freedoms of others. Petty warlords with basement arsenals are not a thing I want to facilitate in the event of future chaos.

We should also ban cars. People drive in them in all states of emotional distress and they can kill multiple people if they're having a bad day with a simple turn of the wheel and press on the accelerator.

Lisa, are you trying to say that Sandy Hook is a place "where lawlessness and violence are part of the micro culture of the area." You better get a grip. Also The US experiences "a European rate of gun crime." Maybe you better get a trunk.

I very strongly disagree. The vast majority of Americans live in possession of guns or surrounded by guns that belong to others and we experience a European rate of gun crime. Newton aside, the hard reality is that our horrendous rate of gun violence in any given year is driven up in a relatively few places in the country, where lawlessness and violence are part of the micro culture of the area and where the perpetrators are clearly not good people. What you're really saying is that there aren't any "good guys". That may feel very egalitarian, to pretend that under the right circumstances we're all a bunch of potential murderers, but it's a dim, paternalistic and inaccurate worldview.
