New Jersey's Chelsea Bruce was crowned Miss Delaware at the annual pageant in Lewes over the weekend.

Bruce beat out a field of 14 women vying for the crown, and the chance to compete against women from around the country at the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City later this fall. Bruce won the title in the FIrst State even though she lives in Manasquan, NJ. As a student at the University of Delaware in Newark, she was allowed to compete in the Delaware pageant. According to Miss Delaware rules, contestants are required to "live, work full time, or attend school full time in Delaware."

A Miss Delaware has never won Miss America, but two women from New Jersey have worn the national crown.

Bruce plans to use the issue of mental illness as her platform over the next year. Through appearances during the Miss America Pageant and elsewhere, she'll work to reduce the stigma for those battling mental illness.
