The search for a kite surfer who disappeared in the water off northern Monmouth County late Friday afternoon is set to resume Saturday.

Authorities began responding to the area near Horseshoe Cove in Sandy Hook around 5:30 p.m. after a report from a boater stating that he found an unconscious man in a harness attached to a kite, according to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard.

But as the boater attempted to pull the kite surfer, described as a white man with black hair, from the water, a large gust of wind pulled the kite line of out of hands and he lost sight of the man, the statement said.

Along with the U.S. Coast Guard's boat and helicopter crews, responding authorities included the New York Police Department Aviation and Marine units, New York Fire Department Marine Unit, New Jersey State Police, U.S. Park Police, Atlantic Highlands Fire Department, and the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office.
