Friday marks the 12-year anniversary of the FDA approval of the drug Gleevec, which has been helping some cancer patients hold the disease in check. The development of so-called "targeted medicines" is a much older story that traces back to our region.

It's the topic of a new book called "The Philadelphia Chromosome: A Mutant Gene and the Quest to Cure Cancer at the Genetic Level," by science journalist Jessica Wapner, who joined NewsWorks Tonight host Dave Heller to talk about the history of the science.
