Philadelphia police leading U.S. in social media use
More and more tips to the Philadelphia Police Department are coming in through social media.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says the department's investment in social media is paying off.
"The department's official Twitter account has 17,789 followers. We tweet alerts around traffic and crime, and interact with followers who tweet questions to the department," Ramsey said. "About 20 percent of all the tips we receive each year come through our social media portals."
Ramsey says Philadelphia's success is being held up as a social media model for law enforcement.
The department's Facebook page, not yet 3 years old, has 53,300 likes. It's the most popular municipal law enforcement page in the country.
"When departments across the country are starting a new Facebook page, Facebook advises them to call the Philadelphia Police Department," Ramsey said.
What's more, Ramsey says the department's YouTube page is on track to have 4 million views by the end of the year.
