Car-charging stations in Atlantic City could be shocking in severe conditions
Officials in Atlantic City are getting the wrong kind of attention for a new electric car-charging station.
The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority's new "Wave" garage at the foot of the Atlantic City Expressway boasts a half dozen charging stations for cars such as the plug-in Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt.
But right next to them are signs warning motorists that the area is subject to flooding.
Mark Earley of the National Fire Protection Association says flooding and 240 volt-circuits don't mix.
"Particularly if the equipment is used while it's submerged, that could be a potential problem and a potential shock hazard," Earley said.
The flooding isn't expected after a small rain; only a severe "100-year storm" would be enough to inundate the new $30 million garage.
A representative of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority was not available for comment.
