A Krampuslauf to remember

There was no hot chocolate, candy canes or holiday cheer Saturday at Liberty Lands Park in Philadelphia and in lieu of Christmas carols, those celebrating opted for something a little more edgy.

To chants and the beat of drums, members of Krampuslauf Philadelphia marched through Northern Liberties to celebrate Krampuslauf.

Decked out in furry costumes and masks, different interpretations of Krampus made their way through the neighborhood before returning to Liberty Lands Park for a bonfire and celebration.

Krampus is a mythical creature who is said to punish naughty children during the holiday season.

Earlier this week, NewsWorks Arts and Culture reporter Peter Crimmins introduced us to the group, who is bringing the Austrian folklore character Krampus to Philadelphia.

Krampus is traditionally held on Dec. 5, followed by Saint Nicholas day on Dec. 6. However, in Philadelphia, organizers celebrated it on December 10.
