Suburban home furnishing store relocates to Chestnut Hill

The definition of hipster as listed in the Dictionary is "a person who follows the latest trends and fashions." So where do those hip people go to shop?

A good place to start is Hipster Home, located at 8236 Germantown Ave. The store features an array of distinctive home goods including everything from kitchenware to picture frames.

Opened by co-owners David Friday and Lindsay Herman on October 1, the store is settling in to its new home in Chestnut Hill. The name is certainly an attention getter, considering a generation of so-called hipster's socially rising, and the owners liked the idea of playing on the term to describe their store.

"We had to find something that would fit our personality, and as we argued about the name (just like any couple would) we jokingly said to call it Hipster Home, and ended up using it," said Friday.

Although the owners joke about identifying themselves as hipsters, the name fits the store, and has proven to be helpful for the stores online presence.

The couple originally opened the store in Phoenixville, PA after they were inspired by the revitalization of the local business district.

"We were encouraged to relocate here from a friend in the business (Doug Reinke

owner) and we couldn't be happier," said Friday.

Both Friday and Herman have a retail background and a keen interest in design. Their influences include Urban Outfitters, Anthropology, IKEA and Crate & Barrow.

"We're a smattering of everything," said Friday. "We look for designs that push the envelope a little farther, but are still functional."

The variety of products they carry include candles, bar and wine accessories, credenzas and shelving storage, Geneva sound systems, greeting cards and various home decor.

"Our furniture gets a lot of attention, one group we work with makes pieces for W Hotels," said Friday. "We look for pieces that are versatile and durable. If you have kids or animals, you want versatile furniture - and I think everybody wants their furniture to be durable."

Friday and Herman are excited to be in the neighborhood. "The energy here in Chestnut Hill is great," said Friday, "especially as a home goods destination."
