The third suspect arrested in the shooting of a Wilmington Police Officer has been identified. This comes as the condition of the officer shot Sunday is now in serious condition.
21-year-old Frederick Gray was charged with first degree attempted murder, possession of fire arm during commission of a felony and possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited and resisting arrest.
Gray is on probation for a 2007 conviction for a first degree assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony commission.
U.S. Marshals arrested Gray Monday evening in Wilmington in connection with the shooting of 34-year-old Wilmington Police Officer Justin Wilkers on Sunday after a traffic stop and car chase.
According to WPD, the incident happened just before 4 p.m. when Wilkers and his partner attempted to pull over the vehicle for an equipment violation. The car took off, leading police on a short chase through the Southbridge area of Wilmington before stopping on the 1200 block of Peach Street. As the passengers got out, Gray is accused of firing a handgun at the officer, hitting him once in the lower left side of his face.
The two other suspects were arrested after the incident and are in police custody. The driver of the car, 20-year-old Jared Wiggins was charged with failing to obey a police signal, resisting arrest and providing a false statement. The other suspect, 21-year-old Ronald Boyce was charged with resisting arrest.
Wilkers remains at Christiana Hospital in Newark. He is now listed in serious condition. Earlier reports had reported his condition as fair to stable. According to WPD, he is having surgery later this afternoon. The News Journal quotes Wilkers step-father, Rick Shea said surgeons are looking for ways to remove a bullet still lodged in his jaw without causing additional injury.
There will be another briefing with Mayor Williams and the Wilmington Police chief at 3:30. Newsworks will have coverage later this afternoon.
