State Sen. Barbara Buono has suffered facial cuts in an auto accident in Franklin Township.

Police say 59-year-old Buono, a Democratic candidate for governor, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick following the accident at about 8 p.m. Monday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Philip Rizzo tells the Star Ledger of Newark that Buono was a passenger in the car, sitting in the back seat. He says the circumstances of the crash are still being investigated.

Buono represents the 18th District in Middlesex County. She is likely to win the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and run against Republican Gov. Chris Christie in November.
