Academy installs T. Rex on Parkway for new dinosaur exhibit [photos]
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University installed an animatronic T. rex on the sidewalk outside of the museum Tuesday morning on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The dinosaur arrived in three pieces at around 5 a.m. and was unloaded with a forklift. The legs were bolted to a base, then the torso, head and tail were lifted and bolted to the legs. The T. rex skin and seams were then hand-sewn together on the dinosaur. The entire installation took about six hours.
The T. rex will remain outside the Academy for the duration of the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit, which opens Saturday, Oct. 12 and runs through March 30, 2014. The exhibit features more than a dozen full-bodied dinosaur models, skeletons, fossils and teeth. Hands-on activities include a dig site and a chance to control the movements of model dinosaurs.
