The colder than normal  winter -- coupled with budget cuts -- is causing havoc for an organization that helps senior citizens with heating bills.

The Emergency Fund for Older Philadelphians is almost out of  money for the year, said Holly Lange of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, which administers the fund.

"The emergency fund is quickly running out of money due to the cold weather, increased demand and lack of resources. We have already spent this year's allocation, we have less than $15,000 left and that's not going to last another week."

Lange is issuing an urgent call for help.

"An individual or a company can call our helpline, 215-765-9040, and there are supervisors and staff that are able to take the donation and also the PCA website or Keep Seniors Warm."

The group is also trying to move some other money into place to pay for heating oil or other utilities to keep seniors warm.
