Will new unemployment numbers stifle President Obama's post convention bounce? This and more on this week's What Are We Thinking?

Here are the topics for this week:

  • Any post-convention "bounce" for President Barack Obama may be compromised by lack-luster Labor Department numbers out today.
  • Both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are happily married, as we saw from their spouses' speeches at the conventions, but the data show that married Americans overwhelmingly support Romney over Obama and unmarried Americans overwhelmingly support Obama over Romney. Why? Is it all about the demographics associated with being married?
  • What's next on the campaign trail? Of the last five presidents who sought re-election (Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter) who was ahead after both conventions and also went on to win?
  • The New York Times pointed out Wednesday that two of the biggest differences in the platforms of the parties are on abortion and same sex marriage. Democrats approve of the right to have an abortion and to have a same sex marriage; Republicans disapprove. Where do Americans stand on these two hot button issues?
