Built in 1914, the sprawling Germantown High School property fills much of the block bounded by Germantown Avenue and High, Haines and Baynton streets.

Despite continual protests and rallies from locals decrying the potential loss of a community mainstay, prime neighborhood location and history did not help GHS avoid a 4-1 School Reform Commission vote to close GHS on the eve of its centennial.

Among the reasons cited by the district was an inability to afford to maintain underutilized facilities and, with decreased student rolls, some areas of GHS went unused.

In lieu of an unexpected lifeline from the district, NewsWorks would like to know what you think should be done with the property.

Should it be sold off to a private developer?

Transformed into a charter or private school?

Is it too soon to tell?

One thing everyone seems to agree on is that it should not be allowed to devolve into a crumbling eyesore.

As we cover what is likely the last three months in the life of an almost-century old staple of a historic community, let's keep the conversation going. For now, pick one of the options from the poll and/or discuss possibilities in the comments section.
