N.J. advances bill to keep credit checks out of the office

By Shannon McDonaldNew Jersey's Senate labor panel has approved a bill that would prevent credit checks from being used as the basis for an employee's hiring or firing.
A 4-1 vote has moved the bill along. Under the legislation, employers would be barred from using credit checks to help them make hiring and firing decision, the idea being that the economic state we're in has many people feeling the crunch.
The business community; however, would rather follow the requirements that allow them to share credit check results with employers and applicants and given them a chance to explain why they have bad credit.
