Nutter calls Philadelphians to participate in moment of silence for Sandy Hook

Mayor Michael A. Nutter asked residents of the Greater Philadelphia region to observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, December 21 to honor a proclamation signed by Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy declaring Friday a "Day of Mourning" in the State of Connecticut.

Mayor Nutter is also joining Governor Malloy in requesting that houses of worship and government buildings in the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding suburban counties ring bells 26 times during that moment in honor of each life that was taken at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"On behalf of The U.S. Conference of Mayors, I send our condolences to the victims, their families, and their community. We know that Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra and Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy are doing everything possible to help the community cope with so much loss and pain," said Nutter.

"Let us in the City of Philadelphia come together to support the Newtown community and the families of those who lost loved ones. We must let them know that while we will never know their pain, we stand with them at this difficult time."
