Cops nab Christiana Mall shooter
November 18, 2010By John Mussoni
A Christiana Mall guard and an Abercrombie and Fitch store employee are breathing a lot easier after two men accused of shoplifting and shooting at them are now in police custody after a bizarre chain of events.
17 year old Miles Turner and 18 year old Aaron Mills, both of New Castle are under arrest charged with shoplifting and a string of gun charges. A state police spokesperson says the whole thing started just after noon Wednesday at the Abercrombie and Fitch store inside the mall.
The two are accused of stuffing clothing from the store inside plastic bags. An alarm went off when the two left the store without paying for the items. Police say a store employee tried to stop the two and inspect the bag. Turner and Mills refused to stop and went out into the mall. At that point, mall security became involved and started after the two.
Police say that's when things started to get interesting. The security started after them through the mall and then into the parking lot. When the guard caught up to the pair he started grabbing at a backpack one of them was wearing. One of the men broke away and fired a shot from a handgun at the security and the Abercrombie and Fitch employee who was still following the pair.
Neither person was injured, but police say they took cover behind the parked cars in the Christiana Mall parking lot. Turner and Mills fled into the nearby woods. State police were called, and that's when the story takes the bizarred twist. A state police trooper spotted the pair getting on a DART bus on Route 7 trying to make their get-away.
The state trooper flagged down the bus, and the two were taken into police custody.
Both are charged with robbery and a variety of firearms charges. Turner was charged with gun charges as a juvenile. Both were arraigned and taken to the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to come up with $54,000 bail.
